Jamaican born, Robert Winslade Anderson possesses a dark, rich bass voice and has a commanding stage presence. His operatic roles range from Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte to Porgy in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Recent roles such as Ramfis in Aida for Raymond Gubbay Productions and Basilio in The Marriage of Figaro for Bampton Classical Opera reflect his diversity as a performer. A keen recitalist and concert performer, his repertoire includes Verdi’s Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem.

Robert was born in Jamaica and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Whilst a student his prizes and awards included the Tom Hammond Opera Prize, the Vice Principal’s Award for Excellence, the Kiwanis International Music Festival Silver Tray, the ABRSM International Scholarship, the Oratorio Prize and the Major Van Someren-Godfery Prize for English Song. Whilst at college his roles included Sarastro in The Magic Flute conducted by Sir Colin Davis, Buonafede in Haydn’s Il Mondo Della Luna and Lunado in Wolf-Ferrari’s The School for Fathers.


Robert joined Welsh National Opera in 2006 where his roles included 1st Streltsy in Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, Captain Petrovich in Eugene Onegin and Bobby in Sweetness and Badness for WNO Max.


Robert left WNO in January 2009 to embark on a freelance career. His roles include King Philip and Monk in Don Carlos, Don Fernando in Fidelio and 2nd Guard in From the House of the Dead for Opera North, 2nd Knight and the understudy of Titurel in Parsifal for English National Opera, Masetto in Don Giovanni for Opera Holland Park, Time and Antinous in Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, Ramfis in Aida for Raymond Gubbay Ltd, Masetto in Don Giovanni and Lodovico in Otello for Birmingham Opera Company, Basilio in Marcos Portugal’s The Marriage of Figaro for Bampton Classical Opera, Der Tod in Der Kaiser von Atlantis for English Touring Opera, Il Commendatore for Opera East’s production of Don Giovanni and Mordec in the newly commissioned community opera, The Knight Crew for Glyndebourne Opera.


Concert highlights include Porgy in Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess with the Sinfonieorchester Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Brian Kay at the Royal Albert Hall, London, Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, Haydn’s Nelson’s Mass at Snape Maltings and soloist in the Mostly Mozart Concert Series at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. Robert made his debut in 2006 at the Edinburgh International Festival in Schumann’s Manfred. A keen recitalist, Robert has worked with accompanist Llyr Williams and has appeared in recital at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan with Japanese accompanist Kiki Kashiwagi.


Engagements last season include I Got Rhythm with the Northern Ballet. Engagements this season include the role of Clarence in American Lulu for The Opera Group and Second Priest and Second Armed Man in The Magic Flute for English National Opera. Future plans include Shaklovity in Khovanshchina for Birmingham Opera Company.
