Welsh soprano Rhian Lois graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2009 with a First Class Honours Degree. She achieved a distinction for her Master of Performance qualification from the Royal College of Music, where she also won the prestigious Lies Askonas competition. In 2012, Rhian completed her postgraduate studies at the National Opera Studio in London, supported by English National Opera, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Wingate Scholarship and Philip Carne. She is taught by Janis Kelly.
Rhian is one of the first recipients of a career development award from the Bryn Terfel Foundation. Other prizes and awards include the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel Scholarship, the Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the Roland Jones prize.
Rhian has appeared in concert with Bryn Terfel at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, and the PJ Hall, Bangor. Other concert highlights include Mozart’s Requiem with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at Birmingham Symphony Hall conducted by Simon Halsey and soloist in CBSO’s Stravinsky retrospective ”Igor Fest” She has also had the honour of being invited to sing to HRH Prince Charles at his home in Mid Wales.
In 2011 whilst a student, Rhian made her performance debut with English National Opera as Ivette in Weinberg’s The Passenger. She was subsequently chosen by ENO as one of twelve young singers to be an ENO Harewood Artist and this season will sing the roles of Frasquita in Carmen, Papagena in The Magic Flute and Nerine in Medee for the company.
Roles performed for other companies include Musetta in La Boheme for ‘Opera up Close’ at the Cock Tavern Theatre and Soho Theatre in the West End, Despina in Cosi Fan Tutte for Opera Project and Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Opera della Luna. She has also understudied Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Amore & Melanto in The Return of Ulysses for English National Opera. Rhian will make her debut in the role of Pamina in The Magic Flute for Nevill Holt Opera in 2013.
