Tosca at Llangollen

24th January, 2017

Bass-baritone Bryn Terfel returns to Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in July!

Witness Puccini’s dramatic story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue, Tosca. With its dramatic story line and Puccini’s richly romantic score, it is one of the world’s best loved operas. The work, based on Victorien Sardou’s 1887 French-language dramatic play, La Tosca, is a melodramatic piece set in Rome in June 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples’s control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. Floria Tosca is the talk of the town, but she only has eyes for one man, Mario Cavaradossi. As his behaviour becomes suspicious, she fears he has another woman. But the truth is far more dangerous. Police Chief Scarpia is obsessed by Tosca, and plans to kill her lover and take her for himself. As Scarpia’s schemes unfold, Tosca and Cavaradossi are drawn into a trap from which there is no escape.

Directed by Amy Lane, Bryn Terfel returns to the Eisteddfod stage alongside some of the world’s leading singers and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra, conducted by Gareth Jones, in this one-off concert performance, with further international artists to be announced shortly.
