Mary-Jean O'Doherty wins First Prize in the Paris Opera Awards

15th January, 2013

Our congratulations go to Mary-Jean O’Doherty (pictured in red, above) who has won first prize in the Paris Opera Awards.

The preliminary round was voted through an on-line voting system by opera lovers all over the world who judged two video clips of each contestant singing two arias of their own choice with either orchestral or piano accompaniment. The jury, comprising of Sherill Milnes, Martina Arroyo and Daniel Lipton, then chose 10 finalists, 5 men and 5 women from the top 50 singers who had the most votes.

The final was held in the Salle Gaveau in Paris on 4th January in the form of a gala performance in honour of Maria Callas, accompanied by the Orchestra Symphonique de Paris. Each finalist had to sing two operatic arias. Mary-Jean’s rendition of Ou va la jeume hindoue from Lakmé by Delibes and Zerbinetta’s aria from Ariadne auf Naxos earned her the 1st prize.
