Caryl in Olivier Award winning ETO productions

Congratulations to Caryl Hughes and cast and production of English Touring Opera on winning the 2014 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera.


The award was given for ETO’s ‘brave and challenging’ productions of Tippett’s King Priam and Britten’s Paul Bunyan, which are currently touring nationwide. Mezzo-soprano Caryl Hughes performs the roles of Young Paris in King Priam and Tiny in Paul Bunyan.


This is ETO’s first Olivier Award. King Priam and Paul Bunyan opened at the Linbury Studio, Royal Opera House in February and are touring alongside a revival of The Magic Flute, in which Caryl sings Papagena.


King Priam performances can be seen at Exeter Northcott Theatre (Sat 17 May), Gala Theatre, Durham (Tue 20 May) and Cambridge Arts Theatre (Tue 27 May) and remaining performances of Paul Bunyan are at The Hawth in Crawley (Tue 6 May), Warwick Arts Centre (Thu 8 May), Exeter Northcott Theatre (Fri 16 May) and Cambridge Arts Theatre (Wed 28 May). The Magic Flute will be at The Hawth in Crawley (Mon 5 May) Warwick Arts Centre (Fri 9 and Sat 10 May) Exeter Northcott Theatre (Tues 13, Wed 14 and Thurs 15 May) Gala Theatre, Durham (Mon 19 May) Perth Concert Hall (Thurs 22 May) and Cambridge Arts Theatre (Thurs 29, Fri 30 and Sat 31 May).


The Laurence Olivier Awards were established in 1976 and are organised by Society of London Theatre (SOLT) to celebrate the world-class status of London’s theatre. They are recognised internationally as British theatre’s highest honour.
