New Role in 2015!

11th December, 2014

Tenor, Gwyn Hughes Jones won’t have much time for festive celebrations this year as he will be rehearsing Walther Von Stolzing  in Wagner's The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. It will be Gwyn’s debut in this challenging role and his first significant role in the German repertoire.

I am looking forward enormously to singing Walther and to the rôle becoming an important part of my repertoire.

Richard Jones's acclaimed staging opens on the 7th February at English National Opera.

An exceptional cast has been assembled  with both  bass-baritone Iain Paterson and Andrew Shore making their stage role debuts in the roles of Hans Sachs and Beckmesser, conducted by ENO Music Director Edward Gardner.

The rôle of Walther von Stolzing is a very important and significant milestone in my career. Walther is an iconic rôle, requiring sophistication, elegance and beauty of singing as well as great strength and stamina in its delivery in order to come close to fulfilling its potential.

Immediately after  his ENO performances, Gwyn will reprise the role of Manrico in Il Trovatore for Scottish Opera. He will also add to his performing repertoire in 2015, two Verdi  roles, Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino and the Title Role in Ernani. He will return to America in 2016 to sing Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in the cinema relay performance from the Metropolitan Opera, New York and will make his debut in San Diego Opera singing Cavaradossi in Tosca.
